Greetings,

The first evidence of the approach of fall was walnut peels on my patio.  The second was our frantic squirrel.  It would scurry across the yard to the oak tree then scurry to the other side of the yard - out of my sight - but I’m sure it was stocking up acorns for the winter.  Back and forth in such a hurry you would think it was the last day before winter.

Jesus warns us

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal, 20 but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Matthew 6)

By the look of our woods you can tell that squirrels don’t find all the nuts that they buried.  There are several saplings of oaks and walnuts.  I checked online and found that squirrels only retrieve 23% of the nuts they hide.

If you have ever moved you know how much earthly stuff you have stored up.  It becomes hard to part with things even if moving into a smaller house.  We are still looking for items after two years.

Squirrels need to store nuts for the winter and we need a certain amount of things to live.  But Jesus calls us to store up treasure in heaven.  These could be actions that we do to help others.  It might be the way we share our wealth with those in need.  There are times that we spend with others during their times of grief or loneliness due to being home due to illness.  There are many ways we can serve God by serving those in need.  This is how we store treasures in heaven.

Peace in Christ

Pr Eunice
